Contemporary dance is for everyone and can be a wonderful, expressive and invigorating art form and we are so looking forward to have these new classes on our timetable.
Contemporary dance covers a broad range of movement styles. The mixture of different genres which feed into contemporary dance extend to flaminco, folk dance, classical ballet and Hip Hop. For example, there is neoclassical work which can be very line focused, and then floorwork which sometimes takes elements from breakdance. Early contemporary dance pioneers include Isadora Duncan, Ruth St Denis and Martha Graham, whose technique is still taught to this day. Some contemporary dance classes are deliberately lead in rooms with no mirrors, and can be very sensation orientated, with a focus on improvisation seeking certain qualities and feelings, rather than specific positions. An example of this is Gaga technique, created by Ohad Naharin. Other major practicioners include Hofesh Schechter and Wayne Mcgregor.
